Where Västerås Airport Actually Is
Västerås Airport, historically known as Hässlo, sits a few kilometres southeast of Västerås city centre and roughly 105 km west of Stockholm along the E18. It is one of the smallest airports in Europe to be sold under a major city's name, and the gap between the name on the ticket and the place on the map catches travellers out constantly.
The airport itself is pleasant precisely because it is small: a single terminal, a short walk from the aircraft, no queues worth the name, and ten to fifteen minutes from touchdown to standing outside with your bag. All of the friction is in the 105 km that follow.

Those are door-to-door times in normal traffic, and they are the times we plan against. The E18 is a fast, predictable road; the variable part is the final approach into Stockholm between 07:00 and 09:00 and again from 15:30 to 18:00. Note also that Västerås is closer to Arlanda than to central Stockholm, which makes it a more sensible connection point than the map suggests.

If your flight lands on time in the middle of the day and a coach is waiting, take the coach. It is perfectly good.
What makes Västerås different from the other Stockholm airports is how little there is to fall back on. The coach timetable is short, the terminal empties quickly after each flight, and a delay of an hour can leave you at a small airport in the countryside at 22:00 with no obvious way out. Which Airlines Fly into Västerås
Västerås is a small low-cost airport. Scheduled traffic is operated by Ryanair, with London Stansted as the principal route alongside Spanish sun destinations including Alicante and Málaga. Alongside that the airport handles private, general and training aviation.
A handful of flights a day has a direct consequence for your arrival: the terminal, the coach and the taxi rank all come alive for the twenty minutes around a landing and then go quiet again. If your flight is late, the infrastructure you were relying on has often already left.
And the usual warning: VST is Västerås, ARN is Arlanda. They are about 90 km apart, so check the three-letter code on your ticket before booking anything. If you are flying in from London on a budget fare, it is worth confirming which of the two your ticket actually says.

Do I need cash or krona?
Neither. Sweden is very nearly cashless and many businesses no longer accept notes. Transfers are settled by card or on invoice; American Express, Visa and Mastercard are all accepted.
Is this what Americans call a car service?
Yes. A black car service, town car or executive car service in the United States is what we mean by a private chauffeur transfer: a pre-booked sedan or van with a professional driver, priced for the car.
Child seats and Swedish law
Children under 135 cm must use an appropriate restraint and the rule is enforced. Over 105 km it also simply matters. Tell us ages and heights when booking and the correct seats are fitted before collection; rear-facing seats are used here until a considerably later age than in most countries.
Will it be dark, and will the roads be clear?
In December the sun sets in Stockholm before 15:00, so an afternoon landing is a night drive. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Swedish winter conditions and our cars are on them; the E18 is a priority route for clearing and salting.
Reaching us across time zones
Stockholm is six hours ahead of New York and nine ahead of Los Angeles. Dispatch is staffed around the clock, and WhatsApp is the quickest way to reach a person outside Swedish office hours. Sweden uses the 24-hour clock, so a 9 pm pick-up appears as 21:00 on every confirmation we send.
